6 Months in a Leaky Boat
When I was a young boy
I wanted to sail around the world
That's the life for me...
This entry is going to be one of the fastest I have ever written.
I received a message from a friend asking me why I had not blogged in ages...
To be frank, my priority has not been to update my blog.
Is that a good or bad thing?
In fact, what I have been doing is living in my life...
IT'S BEEN CRAZY!
I have finished one job, commenced a new one and started my course of study for attempting the PhD. I have moved house, been 'involved' in a ridiculous, one sided, relationship - in which delusion keeps smacking me in the head like I am one of those toy drinking birds that is a perpetual state of motion... with very little purpose and fundamentally, (if you look at it without the psychologically fitted lens) it fits into the category of 'STUPIDITY'.
At the bottom of the world
The tyranny of distance
Didn't stop the cavalier
So why should it stop me...
So I get on with the papers that I have been required to deliver for the purpose gaining conversion to the PhD from the initial research subject I requested to undertake until my supervisor arrives from the University of London in November.
I am teaching Enlgish and Law at a Secondary School in Melbourne. I have always enjoyed teaching - however - this job is amazing...
So, these are the reasons and I do hope I get back to it because my direction has been off kilter for some time...
Ship-wrecked love can be cruel
Don't be fooled by her kind
There's a wind in my sails
Will protect and prevail
I just spent six months in a leaky boat...
Hope you're all well and thanks for the messages...
Cheers

Emerging Technology... is it?
Albeit that I have contributed little to the discussion, I am finding since the readings last week, my mind keeps wandering at the most odd points of the day. For example, I know that we are looking at 'defining evaluation of ict' and I have taken notes from the information we have been given, but it got me to thinking - When is technology emerging and when is it already established? I am beginning to think more and more about this because if you don't use a particular technology, it is neither merging nor established. It is similar to the point I was trying to make about whether we are moving with technology or is technoloy moving us... (all this bought about becuase of the reading of 'evaluating technology... go figure...)
So, with this in mind, I hit Chapel Street on Sunday to walk down one side and then back the other. This was between Commerical Toorak and Toorak Road. I was doing a bit of a 'research' & 'evaluation' of 'emerging' technology... I wanted to see how many businesses were promoting their association with QR CODING, FACEBOOK or TWITTER. The perimater of the research was simple. Look at the shop window and find THE SQUARE, THE 'F' or THE BIRD... I purposely chose Chapel Street as it is considered by most to be a fairly 'trendy' area of the second largest city in Australia.
I was very surprised with what I found.
Of over 100 stores... only 28 of them had any reference to any of them. More surpisingly, only 9 of them had all three and of the 9 QR CODES... only 3 of them actually registered the scan.
Have a good day Everyone

'TIME... is to slow for those who wait...'
Spiral galaxy NGC 2613 observed 84 million light years away by Monash astronomy students.
I have been flat out with my life over the past three days... My blog is something I wish to get into a regular pattern of entry. However, like all mere mortals, I live in this world and have the demands on me - just like everyone else. Blogging takes more time that you could image because the thoughts are relevant and take time to move from just 'thinking' to scribing to typing to editing to publishing... and TIME remains our most valuable resource... So it was nice to make a decision to allow 'MOMENTS' to come to me as my blog... and today this one is it... The image above both inspires and aspires me to continue on with my current path... This is the reason we I am doing what I am doing...
Have a nice day everyone
Cheers

Swimming in The Digital Age..
I am fortunate to have finished full time work at the end of last term. If yesterday is a sign of things to come, I am in for one hell of ride for the next four years of my life. I commenced my day with the readings from one of the research units I am doing at Monash University (from here on in it's simply called Monash!). I was quite amazed at how the information I was reading washed over me like waves in a secluded bay... an extremely, serene, tranquil bay with palms and white sand...
It was the rest of my day that was like being hit by the effects of a tsunami!
My waking day started my day at 5am... Until 7am I was reading research documents from MIT in the USA... I then chatted to my flatmate, cleaned my room, washed clothes, renewed my gym membership, sent information to my tax people, caught up with a friend from Venezuela who is in Australia to learn English, changed the registration sticker on my car, had a two hour induction for my new casual job, updated my blog, replied to 7 text messages... then it was back and forth... back and forth... had to go back to Uni to complete some paperwork and then finally, I sent a total of sent 22 emails.
I had so many things 'on' that I ended up having to cancel one appointment that I really did wish to attend. That being parent/teacher interviews at my old school. Last semester I had written reports for all my students and it was an opportunity to say goodbye and also to introduce their fantastic new teacher to the parents/caregivers more formally. I had spent Tuesday, after doing a full day of CRT (Casual Relief Teaching) between 3:30-7:30 doing the first half of the parents and most of the feedback and handover went swimmingly (to remain on the water analogy). It worked like a machine... 15min turnaround for each interview.
Had it not gone as well as I expected I would not have been confident at deciding to cancel yesterday. Through the wonders of Technology, I had a SKYPE video call with one of my supervisors at Monash. Dr Nicola Johnson - Researcher, Supervisor, Lecturer, Author and generally nice person - and I discussed my thesis, my background and my future aims. We laughed a lot about this and also the struggles of attempting a Thesis about ESTABLISHING THE LINK BETWEEN THE TRANSFORMATION OF KNOWLEDGE AND SOCIAL NETWORKING. She told me of her books that she had written and the professional articles that she has had published in various educational journals. It was a pleasure to finally meet her...
OR DID I?
In the readings I had completed (in my extremely, serene and tranquil bay!)... I was researching into whether the cyber world is a reality or does this type of communication skew reality? According to Chatfied (BBC writer & commentator), when we look at the nature and the quality of our interactions with those around us, the very systems that gift us control - email, text messages, status updates, social media ( I will include SKYPE CALLS HERE) - they have the potential to denude us of what it means to thrive as human beings. He suggested these 'denuded' things being shared history, depth of feeling, the acceptance of each others uniqueness. Of course, one could argue that this quote is taken out of context of what Chatfield was attempting to suggest about 'taking control of the digital age' and I purporting that this information whether it be from the internet or from a book is part of the challenge of understanding the real aspects of the effects of our amazing digital age. Let's just take what I have quoted... literally...
I do not agree with it.
My conversation with Dr Johnson was all of these things and the only reason I was able to do it from my place of residence is due to the very technology that so many people take for granted and raise concerns about. I said goodbye to Dr Johnson and then went about getting on with my afternoon.
The day continued... (see above)
By the time I got into bed at 11:00pm... To be frank, I think the day had drowned me!!! But don't worry, I will swim again tomorrow...
Cheers

Opps, Wrong Waltons...
Initally, I thought this was going to be about one of the Walton Family... Well, it was... but not that Walton Family...
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=439x2147138#2147391
Observation - The power of social media can inform, irritate, challenge and educate people about situations.
Taken in context this article, about the Walton Family, is what it is...
My challenge, understanding and questioning is not so much the article's content - it is more about the motivation for it, the process or implications of it and outcomes because of it. What I will be doing with is researching to find out what the evidence says to support this type of transformation of knowledge. I only saw this article yesterday and I already have learned more about the Walton Family and Walmart than I knew the day before. Is it relevant to the research? Does it mean anything?
I shall follow it and see what happens...

Start of the Day...
This morning WOKE at 6:30am
For the first time today, SLIDE my index finger from left to right across the bottom of the iPhone
Four empty boxes blink at me... ENTER PIN
I switched on the bed light and opened my MACBOOK
While that was loading, I read and replied to three messages on 'WHAT'S APP'
I adjusted the pillow
The cogs in my mind were beginning to turn
I thought of the three people to whom I had just sent messages
ONE in particular because their life appears to be part of my life.
For the second time, SLIDE my index finger from left to right across the bottom of the iPhone
The familar four boxes blink at me ... ENTER PIN
I make a decision to do my blog immediately...
But not sure of topic
FOR TODAY IS MY FIRST OFFICIAL DAY AT MONASH UNIVERSITY
No replies as yet
Mind wanders into many possibilities of who/what/when/why/how
I cut them off...
Computer READY
Move the cursor over the pull-down arrow on FIREFOX and select FACEBOOK
Dave has made a philosophical statement to which I 'comment' immediately
Kevin, Maxwell and Simone are all having birthdays today - so I type a little more than 'Happy Birthday'
Dave has already replied to my comment...
I reply to Dave's comment
For the third time, SLIDE my index finger from left to right across the bottom of the iPhone
Adjust pillow again cough because I have the final remnants of flu
No reply messages

How Many Times Does One Begin? But the Goal Remains the Same!
I know there has been a hiatus on this blog. I have finished up full-time teaching at a local school in Windsor, Victoria and now commence my life as a full time student in pursuit of a PhD! This journey commences on Monday 23rd July, 2012 with the undertaking of two subjects (from the M.Ed course at Monash University - Reading Interpreting and Communicating Data & Emerging Educational Technologies).
Originally, I was planning on moving to Hobart to undertake my research at the University of Tasmania but when push came to shove, I simply could not leave my adopted 'home' of Melbourne (14 years now as my base). It is my favourite place in the entire world and a few weeks ago I found out that my Thesis Application at Monash University (one of the G8) had been accepted.
Since the age of 18 when I first visited Oxford University at the invitation of the late Sir Zelman Cowen, who was then the Provost of Oriel College, I had set my sites on becoming a professor at that incredible institution. By my dedication to the this research, I am now one step closer to the dream.
I am going to use this blog as the basis, part of the research and also, as summary of what I am going to be doing over the next three years. It will be as long or as short as needs be but the underlying element of these entries will be assisting me to add my bit to ESTABLISH THE LINK BETWEEN THE TRANSFORMATION OF KNOWLEDGE AND SOCIAL NETWORKING TO ENHANCE LEARNING OUTCOMES.So yes, I begin again on this blog... BUT THE GOAL REMAINS THE SAME.
Cheers
Steven
PS What I would also like to do with each entry is to offer a recommendation on the topic that I am researching. So, I will begin today! I could not think of anything more appropriate than suggesting to pick up a book (I know, a tad old fashioned in this digital age). It is a good read and is quite amusing in some it's analogies and surprising in some of the facts... HOW TO THRIVE IN THE DIGITAL AGE by Tom Chatfield. (from The School of Life Series published by MacMillan)... enjoy :-)

Tweet... Tweet
For several years I never 'got' the concept of TWITTER. It was not until I had applied for the Lyndsay Thompson Fellowship here in Victoria and also the change in the structure of FACEBOOK, that I really began to see the advantage in this understated, 140 character form of social networking.
Our school launched it's first TWITTER account this week and I am happy to report I had real engagement with my Principal as we discussed the pros, cons and everything in between. We had a laugh because it's taken over a year to get my school DIGITALLY READY for the experience that is TWITTER.
A few things... Here in lies my first real understanding of how social networking links with the transformation of knowledge. The technology became relevant to me. Unless you have the buy-in of others technology can remain a fear for some. If you continue to plod along and create your own agenda regarding technology... TIME will prove fruitful.
I bought this TIME MAGAZINE a few years back when TWITTER was on the radar...I read it again last weekend and I finally got it... So as an educator... I constantly remind myself ... technology needs to be relevant to the task at hand because if it's not... there's no point in using it in the first place...
Have a nice weekend
Cheers

Life is full of Bubbles
Saturday Morning 14th April, 2012.
As a side line, the RMS TITANIC (today is the centenary of it's collision with that piece of ice), was the most technological advanced ship for it's day.
One of the best ways to commence a PhD is with the following website... www.bubbl.us
This website is a free mind mapping site that allows users to create a mind map for any any idea upon which they wish to expand and analise. Play around it with - you can't break and it really does create something meaningful.
I'm moving house this weekend. And my space limit is almost up. Have a nice weekend... Cheers Steven

New Directions...
No this is not a blog about Glee... However, it is a blog about the various paths we choose in this lifetime.
Firstly, my goal is to keep my blog entries to fitting into this rectangular in front of me. Realistically, I cannot spend the hours I once put into previous blogs I have had over the years... Like any writing, it is a craft to be worked at. Unfortunately, it is only the end product what most people experience.
So... the new direction for me is to identify the causes that are important to me. I want... no... I need to find balance of what I need to do, what I have to do and what I want to do...
I'm working on the research side of finding the link between social networking and the transformation of knowledge in children... and I know that neurological patterns are probably a good place to start...
neurological petterns in children
have a good day everyone
cheers

Wisdom of a New Generation...
Here is a nice video summary of one of the many reasons as to why I am doing my PhD. I feel this path is likened to a destiny and an enormous responsibility that I feel toward the future. I see it every day I teach children. As my blog unfolds, I will discuss the various aspects of why, what, who, when and how.... but for now, sure and steady wins the race... I shared this link from my friend, Jane. Both of us are not part of the new generation... we're just determined to be part of the future with a bit of wisdom...
Enjoy...

PhD... The Adventure Begins
Ever since I can remember I had always wanted to be a Doctor. I know, had things been different, I would now probably be a GP on the Royal Flying Doctor Service in the outback of Queensland. However, as with all well laid plans of youth, those plans evolve over the years to become something different to what we had initially imagined...
I work as a educator of students in the primary school setting. I enjoy my job very much and over the past 20 years (I commenced my teaching career at Mt Isa Central School in 1992), I have seen education of primary students evolve mostly in the field of technology.
I am now commencing my journey to become a Doctor... but not a medical practitioner... to become a Doctor of Philosophy... I am going to undertake a PhD in establishing a link between social networking and student learning outcomes.
I am now commencing this blog to run in tandem with that journey.
It all begins...
Cheers
Steven
